Plan for both doses

Who is Shingrix recommended for?

Your age, health history and previous vaccinations help guide the recommendation.

  • Adults 50 and older

Vaccination is recommended even if you have had shingles or received an older shingles vaccine. Ask your pharmacist about the right timing.

  • Adults with a weakened immune system

Shingrix is also recommended for adults 18 and older who have, or will have, a weakened immune system because of a condition or treatment.

Frequently asked questions

A few things to know before you speak with our team.

Is the shingles vaccine free in BC?

It is generally a vaccine you purchase. Some health plans provide coverage. Ask our team about the current price per dose and check your plan's benefits. You can book online or call if you would like help first.

Can Shingrix give me shingles?

No. Shingrix is not a live vaccine and cannot cause shingles or chickenpox.

What if I have already had shingles?

You may still benefit from vaccination. Tell your pharmacist when you had shingles so they can advise you on when to get vaccinated.

What side effects might I notice?

A sore arm, redness or swelling can happen. Some people also experience tiredness, muscle aches, headache or fever. Ask your pharmacist what to expect and when to seek medical advice.

Tell them about previous severe vaccine reactions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition that can cause muscle weakness.

What if my second dose is overdue?

Contact a pharmacist with the date of your first dose. A delayed second dose usually does not mean you need to restart the series.
