Latest BC Health Update

Great News! Expanded FREE Coverage in BC

As of July 2025, the BC Ministry of Health expanded the publicly funded HPV program. The vaccine is now 100% FREE for all individuals aged 9 to 26! Plus, younger patients now only need a single dose for full protection.

Why GARDASIL® 9 Matters

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is incredibly common. While many infections go away on their own, some strains can lead to serious health issues. GARDASIL 9 is the only HPV vaccine available in Canada that helps protect against 9 specific types of HPV: the 7 types that cause most HPV-related cancers (like cervical, vaginal, vulvar, and anal cancers) and the 2 types that cause most genital warts.

*Please note: GARDASIL 9 is for prevention only. It does not treat existing HPV infections or HPV-related diseases.

Cancer Prevention

GARDASIL 9 provides robust protection against the 9 major strains of HPV that are responsible for the vast majority of HPV-related cancers and genital warts.

For Men and Women

HPV affects everyone. The vaccine is recommended and Health Canada approved for both males and females up to age 45.

Safe and Proven

With over a decade of widespread use, the HPV vaccine has a proven safety record and has dramatically lowered cancer rates globally.

Who is Eligible & How Many Doses?

Thanks to the newest BC public health updates, getting vaccinated is simpler than ever. The number of doses you need just depends on your age.

1

Ages 9 to 20: Only One Dose!

Research shows a single dose is highly effective for this age group. If you're 20 or under, you just need one shot, and it is completely free in BC.

2

Ages 21 to 26: Two Doses

Adults in this age bracket need a two-dose series (given 6 months apart). The great news? Both doses are also completely free in BC.

+

Ages 27 to 45

Adults up to age 45 can absolutely still benefit and require only 2 doses. While generally not publicly funded over 26, it is free for certain high-risk groups (including GBMSM communities, trans/non-binary folks, those living with HIV, or post-colposcopy). For others, many extended health plans cover it. We can check your insurance for you!

Check Your Private Coverage

If you are over 26 and don't meet the high-risk criteria for the free provincial program, don't worry. A huge percentage of extended workplace health benefits (like Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, etc.) cover the cost of the Gardasil 9 vaccine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to get the HPV vaccine at the pharmacy?

Yes! Our pharmacists at Brentwood Pharmacy are fully certified in injection administration by the College of Pharmacists of BC. You are in very safe, experienced hands.

I am already sexually active. Will the vaccine still help me?

Absolutely. Even if you have been exposed to one type of HPV, the vaccine can protect you against the other high-risk strains included in Gardasil 9. It is highly recommended to still get vaccinated.

Do I need a prescription from my doctor first?

No. Our pharmacists can prescribe and administer the HPV vaccine right here at our Brentwood location. No extra trip to the doctor is needed. Just book an appointment!

I already had HPV before. Do I still need the vaccine?

Yes, absolutely. There are many different strains of HPV. Even if you have been exposed to one type in the past, the Gardasil 9 vaccine will still protect you from the other high-risk strains that you haven't been exposed to. Health experts highly recommend getting vaccinated regardless of prior infection.

Is the vaccine recommended for adults up to age 45?

Yes! BC Health and Health Canada strongly recommend the HPV vaccine for adults up to 45 years old. While you might not be eligible for the free provincial program if you are over 26 (unless you meet certain criteria), the cancer-prevention benefits are still incredibly significant. Many extended health plans will also cover the cost for this age group.
