Whooping Cough (Tdap) Vaccination in Burnaby

The Tdap vaccine helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, also called whooping cough. Whooping cough can be very serious for newborns, so protecting the adults around them matters. Our team can help you understand your options.

One vaccine, three protections

Tdap combines protection against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough in a single shot. Your vaccine history and any pregnancy affect when you need it.

Who may need a Tdap vaccine?

Pregnancy, contact with babies and your past vaccines help guide the recommendation.

  • Pregnant people, in every pregnancy

A dose in each pregnancy passes protection to your baby before birth. It works best between 27 and 32 weeks, and can be given any time from 13 weeks until delivery. It is free in BC. Book a pregnancy vaccination appointment.

  • Adults who have not had whooping cough protection as an adult

Grandparents, caregivers and anyone spending time with a newborn are good examples. A Tdap booster is recommended for adults vaccinated as children, but it is not free in BC. Your pharmacist will review your vaccine history.

  • Adults due for a tetanus booster

Adults need a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster every 10 years. The Td booster is free in BC. Your pharmacist will confirm whether Td or Tdap is right for you. Choosing Tdap to add whooping cough protection has a cost.

This page focuses on adult vaccination. Children receive whooping cough protection through routine childhood vaccines.

Frequently asked questions

A few things to know before you speak with our team.

Why get it during every pregnancy?

Protection from the vaccine fades over time. A dose in each pregnancy gives your baby the strongest protection in the first months of life, before they can be vaccinated themselves.

I had a tetanus shot recently. Can I still get Tdap?

Often, yes. Bring the vaccine name and date if you have them, and your pharmacist will check what makes sense for you.

Should grandparents and caregivers get it?

Adults who spend time with a newborn should be up to date on whooping cough protection. Ask your pharmacist whether you need a dose.

Do I need a tetanus shot after a cut?

You may. A tetanus shot is usually needed for a dirty wound if your last one was more than 5 years ago, or for a clean wound if it was more than 10 years ago. For a deep, serious or dirty wound, see a doctor or go to urgent care first. For a minor cut, walk in or call us and we will check your timing. Our tetanus shot page has the full wound guide.

What are common side effects?

A sore arm, redness or swelling where the needle went in, tiredness or a mild fever can happen. These effects usually last 1 to 2 days. Tell your pharmacist about any previous severe vaccine allergy.
